“What Is Left”

Winter, 2000

I reached into my chest today
And opened up my heart.
I took a look inside my brain,
And scooped out some memories to go along.
I took what was left of you and me
And gathered them up.

It was bits and pieces of what we were
Sentiment and sadness.
I threw these things where they belonged in the trash
And locked my heart back tight.
I suppose you could try to get in again,
But I seem to have thrown away the key.
